Lavendou Bistro Provencal

The food here is good, but the soufflé  is to die for.

The Raspberry Soufflé from Lavendou comes with housemade whip cream, a fresh raspberry syrup and chocolate syrup upon request. It's like biting into a cloud made of love. I've never had a food that I'd describe as better that sex, but this soufflé, paired with a cold glass of Riesling, it was very, very close.

Road Trip to New Orleans

I took a day trip to the Big Easy with the intention of getting some good eats. I sample quite a few menus. Some good and others not so good. My favorite and the most note worthy was Cafe Amelie. http://www.cafeamelie.com/

If you every visit New Orleans be sure to stop by Cafe Amelie, have a bowl of shrimp & grits and ask for a drink called "Fall Backward".

This is how a Gulf Coast city is supposed to serve seafood. The shrimp was big and fresh, the grits were flavorful and creamy and I could bathe in the sauce if given the opportunity.

Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar

CURRY DEVILED EGGS with créme fraîche & tobiko caviar

I will start off by saying it's a bit on the pricey side, but the food is really good. At some point I put the camera down and dug in, so you don't get to see everything I enjoyed, but everything was good. The food was well seasoned, authentic southern comfort food and don't even get me started on the unique handcrafted cocktails. I personally enjoyed several jalapeno margarita's. If you are ever in Dallas and care to treat yourself Sissy's is where you want to go.

Restaurant Week 2013 in Dallas

I'm a little late on this, but Restaurant Week kicks off here in Dallas TX in just a few weeks. I myself have never participated in the festivities, but I do plan on doing so this year.

Restaurant Week is a event that features over 130 restaurants in the DFW area. For one week you can experience fine dining for a fraction of the cost and feel good about it, knowing that part of the proceeds will be going to the Food Bank. The set price for your meal is $35 dollars at each restaurant.

August 12-18, 2013 (Extensions through Aug. 25 or Sept. 1). Special “Preview” Weekend (at select spots): Aug. 9-11.

I plan on starting close to home. There is only one restaurant near me that is participating in Restaurant Week. Culpeppper Steakhouse is located right off of I30 heading towards the harbor. This restaurant has an old west country type look, but the food has a definite elegant flare. It seem worth checking out, and you can beat a three coarse meal for S35. Take a look at the special DFW Restaurant Week menu below.

Here is a link of all the participating restaurants, their menus and websites for 2013. I'll be sure to post my pictures soon.

Bin 303, Rockwall's Hidden Treasure

This place is AMAZING!
It's location is deep in historic Downtown Rockwall.
Some would even say this is a hidden treasure.
From the outside, this is a very unassuming establishment, it looks like someones house.
It's what is on the inside that really counts. Great tasting food, unique drinks and an ambiance that surpasses any 5 star restaurant. This is a must eat!

White Rock Farmers Market

The thing I love most about this Farmers Market is that it is "Growers Only", which means that the produce you see here is coming from local gardeners. The vendors are all very friendly and knowledgeable. From fresh produce to fresh baked bread, this Farmers Market has it all.

Rustic Tex-Mex From Dallas's Oldest Mexican Restaurant

After a full day of visiting the new Perot Museum, I found myself in the mood for some mouth-watering Mexican food with a frozen margarita on the side. So I started plugging some information into my phone, then glanced up, low and behold do my eyes deceive me, I saw.....El Fenix, one of Dallas oldest Tex-Mex restaurants, considered as iconic as the Texas State Fair.

Just looking at the outside of the restaurant and the authentic feel of the interior decor, I knew I was going to get some good Mexican food. I envisioned someones Abuelita in the back making flour tortillas and slow cooking good traditional Mexican food.

Once I seated, I promptly ordered my Margarita, and received the traditional Mexican appetizer of of chips and salsa. The salsa was good, the flavors danced on the tastebuds, I also enjoyed being able to identify each ingredient used; tomatoes, cilantro, bell peppers, onions and a nice hint of lime. It tasted freshly made. The chips on the other hand lackedluster. Don't get me wrong, they had crunch, but they did not taste fresh, in fact they were not even warm. Upon inquiry, I found that the chips were made off site for all the restaurants. One of my favorite things about a good Mexican restaurant is a baskets of warm, fresh, thin, crispy tortilla chips accompanied by a steamy bowl of fresh salsa.

I decided to order one of their current advertised specials, which was tamales done 3 ways, one with pork, one with chicken and one with beef. Before I go any further, I feel the need to tell you I am some what of a tamale connoisseur. A truly good tamale can stand alone. You can eat it right out of the husk and feel an instant sensation of overwhelming joy. There is no need for sauces, cheese or anything else. Honestly speaking, I can eat a dozen good tamales in one sitting. With that said, I must let you know that I was not impressed by these tamales at all. The masa was dry, the sauces was overpowering to the tamales and the meats were under seasoned. Let us talk about these toppings, one in particular really  very was off putting. The chili sauce, frankly, it tasted as if they opened a can of chili, Wolf Brand Chili to be exact, and put some over the tamale. Now, I love Wolf Brand Chili, it the only kind I use on hot dogs for my kids, but it is not what I expected to get at a restaurant.

Over all my high expectations were not met, but there was a silver lining. Near the front check out area there were these little nuggets of deliciousness, pecan praline. That's another thing us Texas gals go crazy for. Some like the soft and chew, I am a fan of the firm crunchy ones. These candies made the trip to this restaurant worth my wild. Matter of fact, I would go there just for the pecan praline candies. I always give second chances, so when I go back, and try something different, I'll be sure to let you know.
